How to choose Umrah flights from the UK: direct Saudia flights vs one-stop routes, the best airport for your city, Jeddah or Madinah, when to book and how to avoid fraud.
Flights are usually the biggest single cost of an Umrah from the UK, and the choice you make shapes the whole trip: which city you land in, how tired you are when you start your Umrah, and whether you can bring Zamzam home. This guide compares direct and connecting flights from London, Manchester, Birmingham and Scotland, explains when to book for Ramadan and the school holidays, and shows how to check that a flight-inclusive package is properly protected before you pay.
Direct flights from the UK to Saudi Arabia
Saudia, Saudi Arabia's national airline, is the main direct option for Umrah. It flies London Heathrow to Jeddah daily, with extra frequencies in busy seasons, and Manchester to Jeddah several times a week. A direct flight from London takes about six and a half hours. The advantages are a shorter journey and airline staff used to pilgrims: the crew announce when the plane approaches the miqat, and Zamzam is easy to bring back on the return. Direct fares are not always the cheapest, especially in Ramadan, and schedules change from season to season, so always check the current timetable on the airline's website before booking.
Connecting flights: the most popular routes
Most UK pilgrims fly with one stop, which opens up more departure airports, more dates and often lower fares: - Emirates via Dubai from London, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle and Glasgow, to both Jeddah and Madinah. - Qatar Airways via Doha from London, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh. - Turkish Airlines via Istanbul from several UK airports, often with competitive fares. - Etihad via Abu Dhabi, EgyptAir via Cairo, Royal Jordanian via Amman and Gulf Air via Bahrain are worth comparing too. A connection adds two to five hours, but it is often the only way to fly straight into Madinah (useful if you want to start your trip there) or to leave from your nearest airport. Avoid very short connections in peak season, and long overnight layovers if you are already in ihram.
Which UK airport should you fly from?
- London (Heathrow, Gatwick): the widest choice, including the daily direct Saudia flight. Compare dates on our Umrah packages from London. - Manchester: direct Saudia flights plus Emirates, Qatar and Turkish connections; the natural choice for the North West and Yorkshire. See Umrah packages from Manchester. - Birmingham: good one-stop options for the Midlands. See Umrah packages from Birmingham. - Glasgow and Edinburgh: one-stop flights via Dubai or Doha save the trip south. See Umrah from Glasgow.
Jeddah or Madinah: where to land
Landing in Jeddah means you perform Umrah first: you must be in ihram before the plane crosses the miqat, so change at the airport or on board and make your intention when the crew announce it. From Jeddah airport, the Haramain high-speed train reaches Makkah in under an hour. Landing in Madinah lets you start with a few calm days at the Prophet's Mosque and enter ihram at Dhul Hulayfah on the way to Makkah, which many first-timers find easier. The best combination is often an open-jaw ticket: fly into one city and out of the other, so you never travel back across the country at the end of your trip. Our guide to the five miqat and entering ihram on a plane explains exactly when to make your intention.
When to book Umrah flights
- Ramadan 2027 (expected 8 February to 9 March): book three to six months ahead. Flights for the last ten nights, which begin on the evening of 27 February, sell out first. - School holidays: the February half-term 2027 falls inside Ramadan, so demand will be exceptionally high. Easter 2027 is a risk: if Saudi Arabia follows its 2026 pattern, international Umrah pilgrims will have to leave by early April, before or during the Easter holidays. Check the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah's dates before booking anything after mid-March. - Quiet months (November, early December, January, and June after Umrah restarts): six to eight weeks ahead is usually enough, and our last-minute Umrah deals are often cheapest then. Fares rise sharply in the last two weeks before Ramadan and the school holidays, so set a fare alert early if your dates are fixed.
Flight only or a package?
Booking a flight on its own and arranging hotels yourself can work for experienced pilgrims in quiet months. For most people, a flight-inclusive package is simpler and often cheaper in peak periods, because operators buy seats and hotel rooms in bulk. It also brings ATOL protection: if a UK company selling you flights and accommodation together fails, the ATOL scheme protects your money and gets you home. The UK sees Umrah fraud every year, with fake agents selling tickets and visas that don't exist. Before you pay, check the company's ATOL number on the Civil Aviation Authority's website, pay by credit card where possible, and be wary of prices far below everyone else's. Yuusr's flight-inclusive packages are ATOL protected (licence 10066): compare them on our Umrah packages from the UK page, with packages from around £749, or see our cheap Umrah packages. Baggage and bringing Zamzam home
Check your baggage allowance before you pack gifts: it varies by airline and fare. Most airlines flying out of Jeddah and Madinah allow one sealed 5-litre Zamzam carton per passenger, bought at the airport; it cannot go in your suitcase or hand luggage, and some airlines count it towards your allowance. Keep your ihram, medicines and documents in your hand luggage on the way out. Use our Umrah checklist and packing list so nothing is forgotten. For ideas, see our guide to gifts from Umrah.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fly direct from the UK to Jeddah?
Yes. Saudia flies direct from London Heathrow to Jeddah daily and from Manchester several times a week. Most other airlines fly with one stop.
Should I fly into Jeddah or Madinah?
Jeddah if you want to perform Umrah straight away; Madinah if you prefer to settle in first. An open-jaw ticket (in to one, out of the other) is usually the most comfortable.
Do I put on ihram before the flight?
If you fly to Jeddah to start in Makkah, yes: many pilgrims change at home or at the airport and make the intention on the plane before the miqat. If you fly to Madinah first, you enter ihram later at Dhul Hulayfah.
