Planning Umrah from Canada: flight routes from Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton, the e-visa, vaccine, best times around school breaks, and safe booking.
Every year thousands of Canadians travel for Umrah, from the Greater Toronto Area and Montreal to Ottawa, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. The journey is longer than from Europe, with no direct flight and a time difference of seven or eight hours, so planning matters more. This guide covers the routes from each major Canadian airport, the visa and Nusuk permit, the vaccine, the best times to go around Canadian school breaks in 2026–27, and how to compare packages safely.
Flights to Saudi Arabia from Canada
There are no direct flights between Canada and Jeddah or Madinah, so almost every pilgrim flies with one connection. Total journey times range from about 15 to 20 hours. - Toronto Pearson (YYZ): the widest choice, with Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul and Etihad via Abu Dhabi. Emirates and Qatar offer the most frequent schedules. See Umrah packages from Toronto. - Montreal Trudeau (YUL): Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is the most popular route (around 15 hours in total), alongside Emirates, Qatar Airways and Royal Air Maroc via Casablanca. See Umrah from Montreal. - Vancouver (YVR), Calgary (YYC) and Edmonton (YEG): one-stop connections through the Gulf or Istanbul, or a short hop to Toronto first. See our pages for Vancouver, Calgary and Edmonton. - Ottawa: most pilgrims connect through Toronto or Montreal. On such a long journey, flying into Jeddah and out of Madinah (or the reverse) avoids an extra five-hour road trip at the end. If you start in Makkah, you'll cross the miqat before landing in Jeddah: put on ihram during your layover and make the intention on the plane. Our guide to the five miqat and entering ihram on a plane explains exactly when to make your intention.
Visa, Nusuk permit and vaccine for Canadians
- Visa: Canadian citizens can perform Umrah on the Saudi tourist e-visa, applied for online on the official Visit Saudi portal; it is valid for a year with multiple entries. Permanent residents travelling on another passport should check their own eligibility. Visa dates may be shown in the Hijri calendar, so convert them carefully, and never overstay: the Government of Canada warns that overstaying can lead to fines, detention and deportation. - Nusuk: book your Umrah permit free of charge in the Nusuk app for a specific time slot, and your Rawdah visit if you're going to Madinah. - Vaccine: Saudi Arabia requires proof of the meningococcal ACWY vaccine, given at least ten days before you travel. Book a travel health clinic about six weeks ahead, as the Government of Canada recommends, and carry the certificate with you. - Passport: valid for at least six months after your arrival. Use our Umrah checklist and packing list so nothing is forgotten.
Best times for Umrah from Canada in 2026–27
- November to mid-December 2026: quiet, mild in Makkah and good value; ideal for a first Umrah. - Winter break (late December to early January): the most practical time for families; Rajab begins around 11 December, so demand from the Gulf is high too. Book early. - Ramadan 2027 (expected 8 February to 9 March): the most rewarding and most expensive period. Quebec's spring break usually falls in late February or early March, which in 2027 is likely to overlap with the last ten nights of Ramadan; check your school's calendar. - Ontario March break (mid-March 2027): possible, but it is close to the pre-Hajj deadline. In 2026 the last entry for international Umrah pilgrims was 2 April and everyone had to leave by 18 April; in 2027 expect both deadlines around two weeks earlier. - April and May 2027: Umrah is expected to be closed to international pilgrims around Hajj (Day of Arafah ≈ 15 May). - Summer 2027: Umrah is expected to restart in late May or early June, but daytime heat often passes 40°C. Our best time for Umrah and Ramadan Umrah 2027 pages go into more detail. Our Umrah calendar for 2026 to 2027 shows the best windows month by month. Travelling in December or January? Coping with the long journey and jet lag
Makkah is seven hours ahead of Toronto and Montreal in summer and eight in winter, and ten or eleven hours ahead of Vancouver. Many Canadian pilgrims plan a rest day before performing Umrah, especially when travelling with children or older parents: arriving exhausted and going straight into Tawaf in the crowds is hard. Choose a connection that lands in the morning, sleep on the second flight if you can, and keep your ihram, medicines and documents in your carry-on in case your checked bag is delayed at the connection.
Choosing a package safely
The Government of Canada advises using only operators licensed by your local government and authorised by the Saudi embassy in Ottawa, or the official Nusuk platform, and getting every detail in writing. When you compare packages, check the total price in CAD and room sharing, the hotel names and walking distance to the Haram in Makkah and Madinah, the airline and connection, what is included (visa, transfers, Haramain train, ziyarat) and the cancellation terms. Register your trip with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service before you leave. Yuusr lets you compare packages from Canada with flights, hotels near the Haram and transfers, priced in CAD with flexible payment plans: start with our Canada packages.
